Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey is an indie American singer-songwriter and has been described as a "self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra". I like Lana's album, Born To Die, because the songs are different than a lot of the other music I listen to. The messages in the songs vary from wishing she was dead, to her time in an all-girls boarding school as a teenager. They all have very haunting melodies and even though they have dark stories behind them, Lana sings most of them lightly, making them seem less intimidating. The album itself received mixed reviews from critics, with some giving praise to the album's unique sound, but others thinking it was too overwhelming over the course of 12 tracks. Another thing that caught my attention was her voice; she sang the songs lower than most female artists usually do. She thought that people weren't taking her very seriously when she first started, so she lowered her voice, helping her to stand out. In songs like Video Games and Born to Die she sings in a lower tone than in songs like Diet Mountain Dew and National Anthem, where she sings in a higher tone. She is a very talented vocalist with a range to rival most female singers. Overall, I enjoyed the diversity of the songs of the album, and hope she continues to make music for a long time.
